Short-term rental rules passed; owners subject to hotel taxes

Austin homeowners who rent out their properties on a short-term basis are now subject to paying hotel taxes, after the Austin City Council approved regulations Thursday.

City officials will begin hashing out language of the short-term rental rules today, which will go into effect Oct. 1, KXAN-TV reports.

In May, the Planning Commission approved requirements for property owners who rent out their residence for 30 days or less at a time.
