Austin ranks No. 33 among the nation’s 366 metropolitan areas when it comes to total contributions given to charity. Austin residents give about 4.1 percent of their discretionary income to charity, according to a study by the Chronicle of Philanthropy. Austinites contributed a total of $790.8 million with a median contribution of $2,630. The state is more charitable than the Capital City, with 6.7 percent of Texans’ income going to charity, totaling $10.7 billion.
